If you wear partial or complete dentures, it is very important to take care of your mouth. Be sure to keep natural teeth clean and dentures clean . It is also important to see your dental health professional on a regular basis for a mouth and denture examination.

Why should I clean my dentures daily?

  • To remove food particles.
  • To decrease the risk of pneumonia caused by bacteria.
  • To prevent mouth irritation or infection and bad breath .

How do I keep my dentures clean?

  • Place a face cloth in the sink prior to cleaning the dentures to prevent breakage if the dentures are dropped.
  • Hold the denture gently to prevent breakage.
  • Rinse dentures under water after meals to remove loose food debris.
  • Use a denture brush or soft toothbrush to clean the dentures.
  • Clean cheeks, tongue, and roof of the mouth with a soft toothbrush at least once a day.

What should I do to take care of my dentures?

  • Remove dentures at night to give your gums a chance to rest.
  • Scrub and place dentures in a cup of warm water overnight.
  • Regularly check dentures for proper fit. Full or partial dentures that are loose can prevent proper chewing and could be accidentally swallowed.
  • Check dentures regularly for any cracks or broken teeth.
  • Label dentures with your name. A dentist or denturist can provide this service.
  • Use a mild denture cleaner
  • Soak dentures in ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup warm water for hard to remove stains and deposits.
  • Have regular check-ups with your dental professional.

What should I NOT do to my dentures?

  • Do not soak or rinse dentures in hot water. This can change the shape and fit.
  • Do not use cleaners that can scratch and remove the surface of the denture.
  • Do not use a bristled brush to clean dentures. This can scratch the dentures.
  • Do not scratch dentures with sharp instruments in and attempt to remove hard deposits. Hard deposits should be removed by a dental health professional.
  • Do not use bleach to clean or soak your denture as it could discolour and weaken the dentures structure.
