Natural Birth Control Methods

Natural birth control methods involve learning about a women’s menstrual cycle to determine when her fertile phase is happening. During this time of 7 to 10 days (typically), women will not have sex to avoid getting pregnant.

How do natural birth control methods work?

  • The most effective ways to practice natural birth control are:
  • The two main approaches are the symptom-thermal and the cervical mucus approach. Both involve learning the signs of fertility throughout the natural hormonal changes of a menstrual cycle.

How does it work?

  • Women are taught to track their menstrual cycle by taking a daily temperature and/or charting the cervical changes to help determine when she is releasing an egg (ovulating).
  • The woman will abstain from having sexual intercourse during this time to avoid pregnancy.

  • It is 75-88% effective against pregnancy, for typical use.

How do I use it?

  • It is recommended to receive instruction from a qualified instructor in the method of choice.
  • Use the different methods to observe, chart and interpret the menstrual cycle to let you know when ovulation happens. This could include keeping daily track on a chart of your waking temperature with a special thermometer, and/or noting the changes in cervical mucous.
