Why is it difficult for male survivors to talk to others about their experience?

You may feel discouraged because you have talked to someone about your experience and did not receive the support you needed.

  • Not getting the proper support is often related to stereotypes and myths about sexual violence against males.
  • Men can experience a lot of self-blame because there is the social perception that males should be strong enough to resist attack.
  • There is also the misconception that men should enjoy all forms of sexual contact.
  • These ideas can lead to feelings of confusion and self-doubt.
  • Finally, men are socialized not to talk about feelings and personal problems and therefore, continue to keep the trauma and pain internalized.
