If you have an unused well on your property you are required to decommission that well. This reduces the risk of groundwater contamination, which is important in areas where groundwater is the source of drinking water.

Halton Region is now offering a grant to residents planning to decommission unused well(s), up to 50% of the total cost to a maximum of $1,000.00 per well.

The Residential Well Decommissioning Grant is not available to developers.

How to Apply

Important: Complete and submit application before beginning any work. Halton's Water Resources Specialist
must inspect the well prior to decommissioning and approve any work for residents to be eligible for the grant.

1. The landowner where the well(s)* are located must complete the Financial Assistance Application Form ( 33KB) and submit to Halton Region at:

   * Applicants can submit one application for decommissioning multiple wells on a single property.
    
2. Halton Region will contact the landowner to schedule a visit for the Water Resources Specialist to inspect the well prior to decommissioning.
    
3. The applicant must hire a licensed well contractor, who must perform all work in accordance to Ontario Regulation 903. 
    
4. Once the work is complete submit the following documents to claim the grant: (1) a copy of the well contractor's license, (2) the water well decommissioning record (which is also submitted to the Ministry of Environment) and (3) original receipts.
    
5. Upon receipt of this documentation the Water Resources Specialist will contact the landowner and arrange an on-site visit to inspect the decommissioned well , confirm work has been completed in accordance to Ontario Regulation 903 and confirm eligibility of the grant.

Please note: The program is carried out on a first come, first serve basis and funds are limited. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for payment to be processed.

Costs Eligible for Reimbursement

Costs eligible for reimbursement include:

• Licensed well contractor fees
• Materials
• Labour

Costs not eligible for reimbursement include:

• GST
• Drilling new wells
• Well pumps
• Water purification and/or treatment systems
• Permits
• Well upgrades

Applicants are required to accept all terms and conditions of Residential Well Decommissioning Grant Program to be eligible for funding . A complete list of Terms and Conditions can be found in Section 7 (page 4) of the Residential Well Decommissioning Grant - Application Form   33KB.
