Canada’s older adult population is expected to double over the next 25 years. It is becoming increasingly important to support older adults to be active, connected and age well.

The Healthy Aging Working Group

The Healthy Aging Working Group is a group of community partners in Halton who are interested in healthy aging. The vision of this group is that Halton will be the best place to live, work and play for all older adults.

What has this group done so far?

The group explored the literature and drafted a list of healthy aging goals for older adults in Halton which could help build the foundation for future work in healthy aging.

  • 4 stakeholder consultations were held in October and November, 2015
  • 6 open consultations took place in May and June, 2016
  • An online survey on the Sheridan Centre for Elder Research website, May – June, 2016

Feedback from the consultations and online survey was used in completing the finalized list of 6 goals which include the following:

  • Older adults experience the best possible overall health and well-being
  • Older adults have meaningful and supportive relationships
  • Neighbourhoods have a range of affordable and safe housing and transportation options
  • There are meaningful opportunities for older adults to participate and volunteer in their community
  • Older adults are able to live with dignity and
  • Older adults know how to access information, resources and supports.

What happens next?

  • The Healthy Aging Working Group has joined the Halton Age-friendly Network since these groups share similar goals and members.
  • Terms of Reference will be determined for this new larger network.
