Green Cart


Green Carts are collected once every week on your collection day.

Green Cart information

  • Line your Cart with newspapers, paper bags or certified compostable bags with the BPI logo. Learn more about Green Cart liners.
  • Remove additional locking mechanisms before collection (e.g., bungee cords).
  • Only put your Green Cart out for collection. Do not put Kitchen Catchers at the curb.
  • Take food out of plastic bags and containers before putting them in the Green Cart.
  • Keep your Green Cart clean. Rinse regularly with hot water and soap.
  • Put only food and compostable paper in your Green Cart. Remove stickers and elastic bands from fruit and vegetables before putting them in the Green Cart.

Acceptable Green Cart materials

  • All food waste including fruits and vegetables, candy, shells, meat and bones, baked goods, fats, oils and sauces, etc.
  • Paper products including paper rolls, paper egg cartons, paper plates and cups, paper towels and tissues, paper bags, paper frozen dinner trays, coffee filters.
  • Other items including dryer lint, feathers, hair, houseplants, wooden popsicle sticks, wooden chopsticks, sawdust and wood ashes (in paper bags), shredded paper.

Unacceptable materials:

  • No plastic
  • glass
  • metal
  • Styrofoam
  • gum
  • stickers
  • elastics
  • pet waste
  • diapers
  • PLA or BPI certified plastic resin food packaging
  • plates
  • cups
  • cutlery

Pick up a new Green Cart

Halton residents may pick up an additional Green Cart from one of the following locations:

  • Halton Waste Management Site
    5400 Regional Road 25, Milton
    Open: Monday - Saturday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Halton Regional Centre
    1151 Bronte Road, Oakville
    Open: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Halton North Operations
    8140 Fifth Line, Georgetown
    Open: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Robert C. Austin Operations Centre
    11620 Trafalgar Rd, Georgetown
    Open: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Replace a broken Green Cart

Broken Green Carts can be returned for a free exchange to:

  • Halton Waste Management Site

Broken Green Carts are recycled into new containers.

Green Cart liners

If you choose to line your Green Cart with bags, use only acceptable Green Cart liners.

Not all liners sold in stores are acceptable for use in Halton’s Green Cart program.

Halton Region does not accept plastic products or plastic liners in the Green Cart.

If purchasing liners, buy only certified compostable liners with the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) logo on the box as shown here:
