What is the recruiting process for Halton Region Paramedic Services?

All components of the recruitment process will be Halton specific.

Qualified Advanced Care Paramedic applicants will be required to participate in a separate hiring competition. It will be composed of a written exam (January 29, 2019) and an interview (at a later date). A Sibley, Ability Works or OPPAT physical assessment must also be completed. Qualified Advanced Care Paramedics will be contacted no later than January 16, 2019 to schedule their written exam.

  • Only resumes submitted electronically between December 7, 2018 and January 1, 2019 will be considered to be eligible to register for the written exam.

Written Exam

There will be a written exam for primary care paramedic candidates on January 23, 24 and 25, 2019.

  • Registration will begin on January 4, 2019 and continue to January 13, 2019.
  • As there are limited spots available for each sitting, scheduling is based on a first come, first served basis.
  • Candidates will receive a confirmation of application on January 4, 2019; A link in the letter will allow candidates to register for one of five different exam times. Seating is strictly limited to the first 700 applicants to register. Please ensure you check all email inboxes, including junk mail.
  • The exam will take place in the Auditorium of the Halton Regional Centre located at 1151 Bronte Road (external link) in Oakville.
  • The exam will consist of 100 multiple choice questions over a two hour period.
  • We ask that you use parking lot E and enter through the South Auditorium Entrance.
  • Candidates are expected to arrive one hour prior to your scheduled time for documentation verification.
  • The following ORIGINAL documentation is required to gain access to the written exam. NO PHOTOCOPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED:
    • Photo ID - valid class F Ontario driver’s licence (out of province licences will not be accepted without documentation proving equivalency – it is the applicants responsibility to obtain this)
    • AND one of the following:
      • Current college student ID card
      • College diploma from an approved program
      • Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care ID card
      • AEMCA certificate
      • Ministry of Healthy and Long-Term Care equivalency letter
  • Failure to provide ALL of the required documentation will result in denial of access.
  • All candidates for the written exam will be REQUIRED to sign a Code of Conduct waiver (available on site).
  • Due to overwhelming interest, only successful candidates will be contacted to move onto the next stage of the recruitment process

How to Register for the Written Exam

  • Written exams will be held the following dates and timeslots:
    • January 23, 2019: one sitting at 9 a.m. and one sitting at 1 p.m.
    • January 24, 2019: one sitting at 9 a.m. and one sitting at 1 p.m.
    • January 25, 2019 at 9 a.m.
  • The registration link will be available beginning at 8 a.m.on January 4, 2019 until 4:30 p.m. on January 13, 2019.
  • There are limited spots available for each sitting and scheduling is based on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Only online registrations will be accepted. Once capacity is reached for each sitting no additional applicants will be able to register.

Practical Exam/Driver Testing

  • All successful candidates who are contacted via email to continue in the recruitment process will be directed to confirm the date, time and location of their practical evaluation.
  • Practical exam and driver testing have been scheduled from March 4 - 20, 2019.
  • Candidates are expected to provide the following on the date of testing:

Failure to provide this documentation on the day of testing will result in the immediate removal of the candidate from the recruitment process.

The practical exam will consist of one simulated patient care scenario.

  • Simulation mannequin and/or live persons will be utilized as patients for the scenarios.
  • The patient care may involve trauma or medical situations based on the most current published provincial BLS/ALS Patient Care Standards.
  • Any reference material that candidates want to bring into the scenario will be permitted.

The driver test is a spatial awareness analysis where the candidate will be maneuvering through a predetermined route

  • Both of these processes will be completed at:
  • Only successful candidates will be contacted to move onto the next stage of the recruitment process.

Interviews

  • All successful candidates who are contacted via email to continue in the recruitment process will be directed to confirm the date, time and location of their interview.
  • Interviews will be conducted in March and April 2019. At this point, candidates will be expected to provide:
    • an updated resume
    • three professional references related to the emergency medical services field
  • All successful candidates will be contacted via email to confirm the date, time and location of their interview.

Job Offers

  • All successful candidates will be contacted by phone in April 2019.
  • They will receive further instructions on how the process will continue at that time.

Orientation

  • Orientation begins at:
    • Halton Region Paramedic Services Headquarters view map (external link)
    • Session commences on May 13, 2019 for five weeks full time, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
