1. Why does Halton Region have a Residential Toilet Rebate Program?

On average the toilet is the biggest water consumer in the home, accounting for up to 30% of daily consumption. Inefficient toilets can waste thousands of litres of water a year.

By switching to a Halton-approved water-efficient toilet you will:

  • Reduce your water use in your home.
  • Reduce your impact on the environment.

2. Who is eligible to participate in the Halton Residential Toilet Rebate Program?

To be eligible for the program you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Own or rent a single-family dwelling located within Halton Region.

    A single-family dwellings is defined as:
    • A single-detached home.
    • A semi-detached home.
    • A multiplex unit (duplex, triplex, 4-plex, 5-plex, 6-plex).
    • An individual townhouse or condominium unit.
  2. The program is open to residents serviced by both municipal water supply and residents on private wells.
  3. The toilet purchased and installed must be a WaterSense® Certified model. Look for the WaterSense® logo.
  4. Submit a completed and accurate Halton Residential Toilet Rebate Program Rebate Application Form (Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)112KB) and provide your original receipt showing your Halton-approved toilet model has been paid in full.

3. How many rebates can I receive?

There is a limit of 1 toilet rebate per residence at this time. The program continues to be very popular and this allows for participation by as many residents as possible. 

4. How much is the rebate?

If you replace your old inefficient toilet with a WaterSense® certified model, you will receive a $75 rebate.

If you replace your old inefficient toilet with a water-efficient 6 litre model, purchased on or before December 31, 2010, you will receive a $60 rebate. If you are unsure about eligibility, please email Halton's Water Efficiency Clerk or call 905-825-6000 ext. 7337.

5. Which toilets are eligible for a rebate?

Toilets eligible for a rebate must be a WaterSense® certified model. WaterSense® Toilets have undergone independent third party testing.

A variety of manufacturers and models to choose from at different price points are available at different retailers located throughout Halton.

6. How long will it take to receive my rebate?

You should receive a rebate cheque within 8 to 10 weeks from the date that Halton Region receives your application.

7. Can I install my new toilet myself?

You may install the new toilet yourself or you can hire a licensed plumber/contractor to perform the work. If you rent a unit within a single-family dwelling, you must obtain approval from the property owner before proceeding with the installation.

8. Do I have to be on the municipal water system to be eligible to participate?

No. Halton residents on private wells are also eligible.

9. How long are the rebates available?

There are a limited number of rebates available each year. Rebates will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

10. I am a high-rise apartment/ building owner and I am interested in replacing all the toilets in my building with water efficient toilets. Do rebates currently offered by the Region apply to my apartment buildings?

11. What were the 2011 changes to the program?

Six-litre toilets purchased after December 31, 2010 are not eligible for a rebate.

For toilets purchased after December 31, 2010, Halton's Residential Toilet Rebate Program will apply to models that are WaterSense® Certified only.

This includes:

  • Most single-flush toilets with a flush volume of 4.8 litres or less.
  • Most dual-flush toilets with flush volume of 3.6 litres per flush or 4.6 litres per flush.

All WaterSense® toilets will remain eligible for a $75 rebate.

WaterSense® toilets demonstrate sustained water savings and are equipped with chlorine resistant trim components. Six-litre toilets are not classed as high-efficiency and do not meet WaterSense® eligibility.

12. Why did the program change?

Halton Region continues to encourage its residents to maximize water efficiency in their homes by promoting the installation of the most water efficient independently tested toilet models available, without sacrificing performance. This includes high-efficiency WaterSense toilets.

13. Can I submit an Application for a 6-Litre Toilet?

Halton-approved 6-litre models purchased between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2010 will remain eligible for a $60 rebate, even if submitted to Halton Region after January 1, 2011. If you are unsure about eligibility, please email Halton's Water Efficiency Clerk or call 905-825-6000 ext. 7337.

For toilets purchased after December 31, 2010, Halton Region will offer a rebate on WaterSense® performance toilets only.

The performance of high-efficiency toilets (HETs) meets these criteria. Toilets that flush with 6 litres of water are not classified as high-efficiency.
