2013 Smoking in Vehicles Indicator Report

Purpose of the Health Indicator Report

To monitor smoking in vehicles by drivers aged 18 and over in Halton Region, and thereby assess progress made to reduce exposure to second hand smoke.

Key Findings

Overall Findings and Trends Over Time

  • In 2013, 90%(±2) of adult drivers aged 18 and over in Halton Region reported having a smoke free vehicle (i.e., did not allow smoking in their vehicles at all), 4%(±1) allowed smoking some of the time, 5%(±1) allowed smoking except when children were present, and 1%(±1)* allowed smokers to do whatever they wanted.
  • From 2001 to 2013 the percent of adult drivers aged 18 and over in Halton who reported having a smoke free vehicle increased from 75%(±3) to 90%(±2), and this increase was statistically significant.

Smoking Status

  • In 2013, the percent of drivers aged 18 and over who reported having a smoke free vehicle was highest among those who had never smoked, followed by former smokers and current smokers. These differences were statistically significant when comparing current smokers [56%(±10)] to former smokers [91%(±3)], and those who have never smoked [95%(±2)].

Sex

  • In 2013, there were no statistically significant differences in the percent of drivers aged 18 and over who reported having a smoke free vehicle by sex.

Age

  • In 2013, Halton drivers aged 18-24 were less likely than drivers of all other age groups to report having a smoke free vehicle. This difference was statistically significant when comparing adults aged 18-24 [76%(±13)] to adults aged 25-44 [92%(±3)], and 65 and over [92%(±3)].

Municipality

  • In 2013, drivers aged 18 and over in Halton Hills were less likely to report having a smoke free vehicle compared to drivers in Burlington, Oakville and Milton. This difference was statistically significant when comparing drivers in Halton Hills [82%(±6)] to drivers in Burlington [92%(±3)].

Income and Education

  • In 2013, there were no statistically significant differences by income or education in the percent of drivers aged 18 and over who reported having a smoke free vehicle.
