Tips for Busy Families

Balancing demands of home, work and family can be stressful. Learning to manage and cope with multiple stressors is important in improving your own mental and physical wellbeing as well as that of your family.

Some ideas:

  • Create a buffer between work and home. After work allow some down time to re-energize. Spend 10-15 minutes taking a brief walk or just sitting quietly.
  • Stay organized with a family calendar. Display it or use an online version so everybody can stay up-to-date. Ensure everyone is responsible to update the calendar.
  • Avoid over-scheduling. Let children choose one activity per season. Try to limit school night activities.
  • Prepare a menu for the week. Make meals on the weekend for the week and plan for a few dinners when everyone can eat together.
  • Involve family members with chores.
  • Strive for consistency and structure. Children need this to feel safe and secure. Morning routines get children off to a good start while bedtime routines allow them time to relax and connect with parents.
  • Stay in tune to signs of stress such as not getting along with siblings, frequent crying, or misbehaviour. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Take care of your physical and emotional well-being. Eat well and exercise regularly. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
  • Schedule in fun time.
