Oral Care Instructions for Children

  • For children under age 3, no fluoride toothpaste is needed unless advised by an oral health professional.
  • For children age 3 and older, use only a green pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste or a smear amount, unless advised by an oral health professional to use a different amount.
  • Parents should dispense the toothpaste and supervise or do the brushing, until the child is 7 years old.
  • For children 7 years old and older, ask your oral health professional about the amount of fluoride toothpaste they should use.
  • Children should be encouraged not to swallow toothpaste but to spit out excess toothpaste, and rinse well after brushing to prevent swallowing too much fluoride.
  • Use a small, soft toothbrush to clean your child’s teeth at least twice each day.
  • Floss your child’s teeth and brush your child’s tongue once per day.
