Violence & Harassment in the Workplace

There is a range of unwanted behaviours that can occur in a workplace that vary from offensive remarks to physical violence.

Who might harass an employee?

  • Someone with:
    • a formal connection to the workplace, such as a co-worker or supervisor.
    • no formal connection to the workplace, such as a stranger, or a current or past intimate partner who brings violence or harassment into the workplace.

What does Ontario have to say?

  • On June 15, 2010, the Ontario Legislature passed Bill 168, which amends the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) to include specific requirements regarding preventing and addressing incidences of violence and harassment in the workplace.
  • Employers are required under the law to have policies and programs in place to deal with workplace violence. These policies and procedures must include training for employees, and processes for workers to report incidents of workplace violence to their employer or supervisor.

What can Employees do?

  • Become familiar with the legislation and the definitions of violence, harassment, bullying and domestic violence.
  • Work with your employer to make sure policies and programs are in place.
  • Work with your employer to make sure policies and programs that address violence and harassment in the workplace are effective.
  • If you see evidence of workplace violence, harassment or bullying, report it to your employer or supervisor.
  • If you are experiencing violence, harassment or bullying at work, report it to your employer or supervisor.
  • Familiarize yourself with your workplace EAP programs and other community crisis and counselling supports for employees experiencing workplace violence or harassment.
