What is Tobacco-Free Sport and Recreation?

• Tobacco-free sport and recreation means everyone taking part in a sport or recreational activity does not use tobacco industry products ( 207KB).

• It means participants, spectators, coaches and leaders do not smoke, snuff, dip, or chew tobacco while engaged in the activities of your organization

Why Sports and Recreation?

• Sport and recreation organizations play a vital role in the health and wellness of our community. 
• Tobacco-Free Sports and Recreation programs create an environment where adults and young athletes become tobacco-free role models who send a powerful message to youth that tobacco is not part of healthy living.

What are the benefits of Tobacco-Free Sport and Recreation?

• Giving everyone a chance to perform at their best
  Tobacco use goes against the health benefits gained by participating in sport and recreational activities.
• Preventing youth from starting to use tobacco industry products
  Children and youth model their behaviour after the people they look up to – coaches, leaders, family, and peers.
• Protecting the environment
  Cigarette butts are the main source of litter in communities and on beaches. It takes 15 years for a cigarette butt to biodegrade.
• Protecting everyone from second-hand smoke
  There is no known safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, even outdoors.
• Creating a tobacco-free culture
  It is important for youth to receive the same tobacco-free message at their local sport or recreation activities as they receive at school and in the wider community. 
• Helping smokers quit
  • Smoker’s Helpline provides personal support and a community of quitters at your fingertips. Call 1-877-513-5333 or visit Smoker's Helpline today for help.
  • At the Stop Smoking Clinic, a health professional will help you assess your lifestyle, understand why you smoke, set a quit date and choose a personalized method of quitting.

What is the Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free Grant?

• A maximum of 8 grants in total are being offered to non-profit sport and recreation groups in Halton. 
• These grants support the development and promotion of tobacco‐free policies (also
  known as Codes of Conduct) by sport and recreation organizations.
• Grants will be awarded:
  
  • on a first come, first serve basis.
  • on receipt of a fully completed application that meets the eligibility criteria, and includes supporting documentation (if requested).

How do I apply for a Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free Grant?

• Complete the application (280KB) outlining plans to develop and promote a tobacco-free policy.
• Submit the application by:
