What is alcohol poisoning?

  • Alcohol poisoning is a condition in which a toxic amount of  alcohol has been drunk, usually in a short period of time.
  • The toxicity is related to the amount of alcohol in your blood.

What are the symptoms of alcohol poisoning?

  • Vomiting - this is the body's first defense against alcohol poisoning.
  • Unconsciousness (passed out) or semi-conscious.
  • Cold, pale or bluish skin.
  • Slow or irregular breathing.
  • Less than 8 breaths per minute.
  • 10 seconds or more between breaths.

What can I do if someone has alcohol poisoning?

  • If you are with someone showing the above symptoms and they have been drinking alcohol, help is required immediately - CALL 911!
  • Turn the person on their side. This will prevent the person from choking if they start to vomit.
