Medications that help with quitting smoking

Certain medications may help reduce your withdrawal symptoms when quitting smoking and may increase your chances of success. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medications. Inform them of any health conditions you may have, or any medications you are using.

Champix® (Varenicline Tartrate)

  • Champix® is a medication, which is used with patients who cannot tolerate nicotine replacement therapy or those who prefer non-nicotine treatment.
  • Champix® is available by prescription only.
  • If you decide to use Champix®, treatment begins one to two weeks before your quit date and your dosing should follow your physician’s directions.

Nicotine Patch (Harbitrol® , NicoDerm® ).

  • The patch replaces nicotine by absorption through the skin.
  • This medication can be bought over-the-counter in pharmacies. No prescription is needed.
  • If you decide to use the patch, do not smoke, and be sure to read the User Guide enclosed in the package, and speak to your pharmacist.

Nicotine Gum (Nicorette ® Gum)

  • Nicotine gum replaces nicotine by absorption through the lining of the mouth.
  • This can be bought over-the-counter in 2 or 4mg. No prescription is needed.
  • If you decide to chew the nicotine gum, be sure to read the User Guide enclosed in the package, and speak to your pharmacist.

Nicotine Inhaler (Nicorette ® Inhaler)

  • Nicotine inhaler replaces nicotine by releasing a vapour that is absorbed through the lining of the mouth.
  • This can be bought over-the-counter. No prescription is needed.
  • If you decide to use the inhaler, do not smoke, and be sure to read the User Guide enclosed in the package, and speak to your pharmacist.

Nicotine Lozenges (Nicorette® Lozenges)

  • Nicotine lozenges replace nicotine by absorption through the lining of the mouth.
  • This can be bought over-the-counter in 2 or 4mg. No prescription is needed.
  • If you decide to use nicotine lozenges, be sure to read the User Guide enclosed in the package, and speak to your pharmacist.

Zyban ® (Bupropion Hydrochloride)

  • Zyban ® is a medication, which is used with patients who cannot tolerate nicotine replacement therapy or those who prefer non-nicotine treatment.
  • Zyban ® is a sustained-release tablet that is available by prescription only.
  • If you decide to use Zyban ® , treatment begins two weeks before your quit date or follow your physician’s directions.
