Making a Decision About Pregnancy

Making a decision about an unwanted pregnancy is a difficult one. There are some things you can think about that may help clarify your feelings about being pregnant, your plans and dreams for the future, and your thoughts and beliefs about each of the options.

Things to Consider

An unplanned pregnancy may create mixed and conflicting feelings. For example, you might feel:

  • Worried about being able to raise a child.
  • Afraid you will have to give up other things that are important to you.
  • Concerned about how other people may react.

At the same time, you might also feel:

  • Happy to learn that you can get pregnant.
  • Pleased to have the opportunity to have a baby.
  • Excited by a new and unique event in your life.
  • If you have decided to keep the baby as a single mother or with your partner, prenatal care for yourself and the baby is important.
  • There are a variety of informal and formal supportive agencies in your community that can help you now and after the baby is born. One of the programs in Halton is Halton Healthy Babies Healthy Children.

How do you know if parenting is right for you?

Parenting as a single parent or with your partner may be right for you if:

  • You believe that you are ready to assume the responsibility of being a parent
  • You can accept the physical and emotional aspects of pregnancy, labour and delivery and childcare.
  • You can consider the feelings of your partner and your family but ultimately understand that a pregnancy option decision belongs to you.
  • You are willing to consider the child's needs for the next 18 years.
  • You are willing to learn and practice parenting skills.
  • You have discussed your need for support with those who care about you.
  • You can arrange the necessary finances to care for yourself and the child including medical, food, clothing and housing.

The Health Department Sexual Health Clinics offer free and confidential counselling regarding all pregnancy options.
