What does transgender mean?

  • A person who is transgender feels at conflict with their body.
  • While their physical sex may be male or female, their gender identity is the opposite.
  • The medical term for transgender is "gender dysphoria". Some people also use the term transsexual.

How does a person know that they are transgender?

  • You might feel like your brain is telling you that your gender is exactly opposite to your physical body parts.
  • You might feel trapped inside the body of the opposite sex.
  • Some people say they knew from a young age that they had the wrong body for the gender they are.
  • Some people may struggle to match their personality and gender with their physical body until it becomes so difficult that they seek to change their physical body to match what their mind tells them.

  • It is your choice about what to call yourself or how to introduce yourself to others.
  • Each person will choose the term they are most comfortable with.
  • Both transgender and transsexual are commonly used terms.

What challenges face transgender people?

  • There is often prejudice and sometimes violence expressed towards those who are transgender/transsexual, making their lives very difficult.
  • Some people may  encounter many hurdles in order to achieve the correction of the physical body to match their identity, such as facing family and friends, medical organizations, treatment costs, and the ‘half-way’ stage of treatment.

Myths About Transgender

There are many myths about transgender individuals:

Myth

All transgender/transsexual are male-to-female.


Fact

Although male-to-female transsexuals receive the most media coverage, almost half of all transsexuals are female-to-male.

Myth

Transgender/Transsexual people are all homosexuals.


Fact

Transsexuality refers to someone who feels that their physical body is opposite to what sex their brain tells them they are. Transsexuals may be heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.

Myth

A cross-dresser or a transvestite is the same thing as being transgender.


Fact

A cross dresser or transvestite is someone who dresses in the clothes of the opposite sex for erotic enjoyment. Many transvestites are heterosexual men.
