What is the Eat Smart! Program?

Eat Smart! is an Award program that recognizes Ontario schools, workplaces, and recreation centres that meet exceptional standards in nutrition, safe food handling, and a smoke-free environment.

Halton Region offers:

1. Eat Smart! Ontario's Healthy School Program
2. Eat Smart! Ontario's Healthy Workplaces Program

The Eat Smart! Recreation Centre Program is not offered at this time.

The goal of these programs is to contribute to the reduction of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, as well as food-borne illnesses in Ontario. An "Award of Excellence" is awarded to school and workplace cafeterias that meet exceptional standards in nutrition and food safety. Public health dietitians and public health inspectors work together with schools, workplaces and foodservice companies to help meet the stringent criteria.

Eat Smart! cafeterias must meet high standards in 3 key areas:

1. Healthy Food Choices
   • more whole grain options, vegetables and fruits
   • lower fat options
   • substitutions at request
2. Food Safety
   • a proven track record in safe food handling and sanitation
   • staff trained in safe food-handling processes, approved by the Halton Region Health Department
3. Non-Smoking
   • a proven track record of compliance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act
   • do not sell tobacco products
