What is 311?

  • 311 is an easy-to-remember, three-digit, non-emergency telephone number that offers a single window of direct access to Halton government services. 
  • 311 provides free, multilingual assistance to anyone calling from within Halton.
  • It allows citizens to request a service or receive general information.

Why do we need 311?

  • 311 means you don't need to know which Halton government provides a particular service. You don't have to sort through dozens of telephone numbers to find the people you need to talk to.
  • 311 also provides an easy-to-remember telephone number for non-emergency police calls which will reduce the burden of non-emergency calls made to 9-1-1.

How does 311 work?

  • 311 calls will be answered by customer service representatives in Access Halton.
  • While 311 is a program of Halton Region, callers will be able to access the programs and services provided by any of the eight partner organizations:
    • Regional and Local Municipal governments
    • Halton Regional Police Service
    • Halton District School Board
    • Halton Catholic District School Board
  • The customer service representatives will use a powerful database of about 1,500 records to respond to your inquiries on a vast array of Halton government services.

What are the hours of operation?

  • You can dial 311 any time and speak to a live person.
  • Regular business hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • After regular business hours, only those of an urgent nature will be handled.

Will 311 work from cell phones, payphones, etc.?

  • Yes.

How can I contact 311 Halton from outside the region?

  • If you are outside Halton, you can contact a 311 customer service representative by calling 905-825-6000 or 1-866-442-5866.

Will 311 work using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or a digital phone service?

  • 311 will function with VoIP services if the service provider configures the user's location as within Halton's geographic boundaries.
  • If you subscribe to a VoIP telephone service and cannot reach Halton Region by calling 311, contact your service provider to configure your location.

I called 311, but did not reach Halton Region. What can I do?

  • You can contact a 311 customer service representative by calling 905-825-6000 or 1-866-442-5866.
  • If you call 311 from a residential landline phone within Halton and cannot connect with us, contact your telephone service provider. Please also report the matter to us so we can investigate by calling 905-825-6000 or 1-866-442-5866.
  • If you call 311 from a cell phone while in close proximity to a regional border, you may connect to a cellular tower outside Halton. As a result, you may reach Peel Region (if near Mississauga/Brampton) or your call may not connect (if near Hamilton/Wellington County). In these areas, please call 905-825-6000 or 1-866-442-5866.

I can dial 311 from my home but it doesn't work from my office. Why not?

  • Some businesses have complex telephone systems that may not be configured for users to connect with us by calling 311. For assistance, contact a system administrator.

My cell phone number is linked to another municipality. Can I still call 311 Halton?

  • Cell phones from other municipalities should connect with us when you call 311 within Halton's borders, even if your phone number has an area code other than those within Halton Region (905, 289, 365, 519 or 226). If your call does not connect, you can contact a 311 customer service representative by calling 905-825-6000 or 1-866-442-5866.

Can I still call the city or town directly using the ten digit number I have previously used to reach them?

  • Yes, and if you know the name of the person you wish to speak to, you should always call the ten-digit numbers.
