Finding an Apprentice

An apprentice becomes a certified skilled worker once he or she has completed the training requirements in the provincial standard for the trade. There are over 200 apprenticeship trades in Ontario. Sixty-seven trades have a specific regulation and in 30 of these skilled trades, an apprentice is eligible to be certified to work in any province or territory in Canada.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program  (OYAP) External Link

  • OYAP helps young people obtain placements in 130 skilled trades that can be learned through apprenticeship training. Students register as apprentices and begin their formal apprenticeship training while they are still in school. With both a diploma and the skills to get the job done when they graduate, these students have a big head start.

The Ontario Government registers apprentices, counsels apprentices and employers, monitors training, delivers exams, issues certificates, develops inter-provincial programs and promotes training. About 250 staff provide services through 26 offices.

Currently, the Ontario government regulates apprenticeship training through the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act. The Act has not been significantly revised since 1964.
