Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for rent-geared-to-income housing, applicants (including all members of the household that will live with you) must meet the following criteria:
  • At least one member of the home must be 16 years of age or older.
  • The household is able to take care of themselves (with or without the help of a support service agency).
  • All household members are legal residents of Canada. This includes:
    • Canadian citizens
    • Individuals with landed immigrant or permanent resident status
    • or refugee claimants
  • People who are under an enforceable deportation, departure or exclusion order are not eligible.
  • No member of the household owes money to another social housing provider anywhere in the province.
  • No member has been convicted within the last 24 months of an offence under section 55 of the Housing Services Act, 2011 which states:
    • No member of a household shall knowingly obtain or receive rent-geared-to-income (RG) assistance for which the household is not eligible.
    • A person shall not knowingly aid or abet a member of a household to obtain RGI assistance for which the household is not eligible.
    • If convicted of one of the above offences, a person is liable to a fine of not more than $5,000 or imprisonment for a term no more than six months, or to both.
  • No member has been convicted within the last 24 months of a crime under the Criminal Code (Canada) in relation to the receipt of RGI assistance.

Proof of income and status

You will be required to provide your most recent Notice of Assessment (tax form from Canada Revenue Agency) and proof of status in Canada (birth certificate, immigration papers etc.) to determine eligibility.

Seeking Other Sources of Income

If Halton Region or the housing provider determines that you or a member of your household is eligible to receive income from one of the programs listed below, you/other member of household will be required to apply for and make reasonable efforts to receive income from one of these programs before receiving rent-geared-to-income assistance:

Keeping Your Application Up-to-date

You are responsible:
  • To advise HATCH of any changes to your address or phone number. If we are not able to contact you, your application will be cancelled.
  • To advise HATCH of any changes to your family size (i.e. birth of a child, separation from spouse etc.)
  • To advise HATCH if you wish to make any changes to your building selections.
All communications with HATCH must be in writing.
