Taking Care of Your Health - Falls Prevention for Older Adults

Medications

  • As our bodies age, physical changes may cause us to have more side effects from medications.
  • Side effects from prescription medications, over-the-counter products and herbal medications may cause you to feel sleepy or dizzy, which can increase the risk of falling and other injuries.
  • Practice safer medication use. Taking 4 or more prescription medications can cause unfavourable interactions putting you at a higher risk of falling. At least once a year, talk to your doctor and or pharmacist about the medicines you are taking. Also, return unused medications to a pharmacy for proper disposal.
  • If you drink, learn more about alcohol’s possible negative interactions with prescription, over-the-counter or herbal medications.
