How can I make sure I eat well?

  • Build your meals around Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide External Link.
    • Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide is a simple tool designed to help you and your family get all the nutrients needed for good health. It tells you the types and amounts of food to eat from each of the four food groups.
  • For lunch and dinner, include at least 1 food from each of the 4 food groups.
  • For breakfast, include at least 3 of the food groups.
  • For snacks, 2 of the food groups.

What can I do to change my eating habits?

  • If you think you could be eating better, you don't have to change your whole diet at once.
  • Pick 1 goal for improvement and stick with it. And then gradually add others.
  • Healthy eating doesn't mean that you have to give up the foods that you enjoy. All foods can be enjoyed in moderation.

Is it safe to diet?

  • No, dieting can promote unhealthy body image ideals and lower self-esteem.
  • Don't focus your eating on "diet" or "low-calorie" foods. Choose to eat less fat more often and enjoy nutritious foods like grains, cereals, lean meats, beans, lentils, vegetables and fruit more often.
  • The "no dieting approach" refers to your children as well , no matter what their shape or size. Depriving children of food means depriving them of nutrients that they need to grow.
  • Promote regular healthy eating and physical activity and feeling good about yourself.
