Oral Health Programs and Services

Halton Region delivers oral health programs and services as mandated by the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) and provides additional programs and services to meet the needs of the community.

  • Oral health screening in schools
  • Oral health clinics
  • Oral health promotion
  • Oral health navigation
  • Management of financial assistance programs
  • Community water fluoridation surveillance
  • Additional supports for adults with special needs and the elderly
  • Oral health screening in schools

    Registered dental hygienists conduct dental screenings (a quick look into a child’s mouth using a sterilized mirror) to determine if the child has any obvious problems (e.g., cavities). Halton Region also collects information from these in-school screenings to help plan future activities.

    Oral health clinics

    Oral health clinics are available for all ages by appointment only.

    Services include:

    • oral health assessments (a quick look into the mouth using a sterilized mirror);
    • determination of eligibility for financial assistance for dental care; and
    • provision of oral health information, resources and recommendations.

    Oral health promotion

    Halton Region promotes oral health in the community in many ways including:

    • participation at various community events;
    • responding to inquiries from residents and community partners (e.g., for resources such as those available on our Oral Health Education for Teachers & Educators web page); and
    • the development of initiatives to improve the oral health of Halton residents.

    Oral health navigation

    Halton Region provides oral health supports and services, including outreach and case management. Our Oral Health team:

    • assist clients in seeking a dental provider (dentist, dental hygienist, and/or denturist);
    • help residents to access financial assistance for dental treatment; and
    • provide residents with individual guidance and support.

    Community water fluoridation surveillance

    Halton Region provides ongoing monitoring of fluoride levels in community drinking water to ensure they are within the acceptable range to optimize dental benefits. For more information about water fluoridation, please visit Halton’s Fluoride web page.

    Additional supports for adults with special needs and the elderly
