Cycling Law and Enforcement

Under the Highway Traffic Act, bicycles are considered as vehicles. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. However, cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road user groups, so safety is always a prime concern. Cyclists should behave like traffic when using roads, regardless of whether cycling provisions are present.

Within Halton Region, only the City of Burlington permits cyclists to use sidewalks.

Halton's Share the Road Program

Share the Road signEducation is important for all road and path users including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. “Share the Road” is a lesson that makes roadways safer and more efficient for both motorists and cyclists.

In 2002, Halton Region installed "Share the Road" signs at various places in the road network.

These locations:

  • May be common cycling routes.
  • Have scenic or recreational interest.
  • There may be linkages to municipal bike routes nearby.
  • Generally have good pavement conditions, low truck volumes and reasonable speed limits.

The program goal is to raise motorist awareness of popular cycling routes, particularly in rural areas. See www.sharetheroad.ca External Link for more information.
