Rural Agricultural Strategy

Halton Region is developing a Rural Agricultural Strategy. The purpose of the Strategy is to identify how the Region can, within its mandate and resources, support the long-term sustainability of the rural economy. This includes; farms and farm support businesses, on-farm businesses secondary to a farming operation, non-agricultural uses in rural hamlets and clusters, and cottage industries and home occupations.

The Halton Region Rural Agricultural Strategy Background Report (PDF file) (Appendices (PDF file)) will inform the development of the strategy, which contains a comprehensive analysis of the agricultural and rural areas in Halton Region. This analysis includes hamlets and rural clusters, identification of specific needs and challenges facing farmers and rural businesses, a review of legislation, regulation, policies and plans, an environmental scan of best practices and programs and a SWOT analysis for agriculture and the rural settlement areas.
