Comprehensive Housing Strategy

Halton Regional Council approved A Comprehensive Housing Strategy for Halton Region Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) 75KB in June 2006. Family in front of house

Strategic directions identified include:

  • Promoting healthy communities through public awareness and acceptance of all housing types
  • Encouraging and protecting affordable housing
  • Encouraging and protecting assisted housing
  • Supporting independent living and accessible housing
  • Retaining and regaining housing for those at-risk of homelessness

We are currently researching and implementing several priority initiatives related to the Comprehensive Housing Strategy (CHS), and here are a few of the results from 2007:

  • Launch of pilot ‘Be a Hero. Be a Voice for Affordable Housing.’ high school contest.
  • Drafting a sustainable plan to create 800 new units of affordable housing by 2015.
  • Participation in the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.
  • Created a working group to address issues of accessible housing.
  • Working with the federal government to allocate funds locally from the new Homelessness Partnering Initiative.

Draft Joint Municipal Housing Statement (JMHS)

The Draft Joint Municipal Housing Statement (JMHS) is a collaborative effort between the Region and the Local Municipalities (Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville). It builds on the earlier work of the Region's Comprehensive Housing Strategy (2006).

JMHS identifies 53 specific policies and programs to help increase the amount of affordable housing in Halton. Some of these policies have been included in ROPA 38. The remaining policies and programs will be addressed as part of the update to the Region's Comprehensive Housing Statement (scheduled for 2010).
