The Federal Gas Tax Fund was originally announced in the 2005 Federal Budget and committed approximately $1.9 billion to Ontario municipalities for environmentally sustainable infrastructure over a five year period (2005-2010).  Municipalities can apply funding to infrastructure projects that promote cleaner water, cleaner air, or reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Predictable, long-term and entitlement-based, funding is helping Ontario municipalities plan for environmental sustainability and address a massive, province-wide infrastructure deficit.

Federal Gas Tax funding provides additional revenues for Municipalities and Unincorporated Areas rather than displacing other federal infrastructure funding.  As such, it is expected that Halton Region’s Capital Expenditures on eligible projects will not fall below its Base Amount of $294,906,519 annually.  This amount was based on Halton Region’s Gross Capital Expenditures for the period January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2004 for eligible project categories.
