2011 Community Salary Information

Approximately 90 licensed child care operators have a Purchase of Service Agreement with Halton Region and receive wage subsidy. Halton Region provides wage subsidy funding to approximately 1100 permanent staff including registered early childhood educators, early childhood assistants, cooks and supervisors. The wage subsidy funds are used to enhance the salary level of staff working in licensed child care programs as well as benefits and professional development.

The chart below outlines the 2011 base hourly salaries, excluding wage subsidy. This information is collected from child care operators receiving wage subsidy on an annual basis.

In March 2011, the Halton Child Care Salary and Benefit Survey was issued to all licensed child care programs in Halton. In total, 166 operators responded to the survey. The survey was developed with support from the Halton Child Care Advisory Group.

Here is a summary of the results:
  • 72% stated staff wages were the most important reason for staff leaving
  • 49% of respondents stated the average work week for RECE’s was 40 hours followed by 21% at 35 hours
  • 74% stated RECE’s average starting vacation was 2 weeks and the maximum was 4 weeks vacation
  • 16% said the starting RECE hourly rate was $13.00-$13.50 followed by 14% stating the starting RECE hourly rate was $12.00-$12.50
  • 49% of respondents stated the top hourly rate for RECE’s was $17.00 followed by 11% who stated the top hourly rate for RECE’s was $14.00-$14.50
