Don’t wait for a rainy day

Aug 22, 2019

With more severe and unpredictable wet weather in southern Ontario, flooding can happen when we least expect it.

Halton is committed to helping the community remain resilient to extreme weather events, and one of the ways we are doing this is by supporting homeowners with the cost of home improvements that can help prevent flooding. Our Enhanced Basement Flooding Prevention Subsidy program provides financial support and access to licensed professionals for four flood prevention modifications that can help reduce the risk of flooding.

Applying to the program is easy. Visit Halton’s Enhanced Basement Flooding Prevention webpage to find information on the subsidy program and more information about how Halton can help with the cost of:

Downspout disconnection
100 per cent of the eligible costs to disconnect your downspouts from the sanitary sewer system, up to a maximum of $500.

Weeping tile disconnection and sump pump installation
100 per cent of the costs to disconnect weeping tiles and install a sump pump, up to a maximum of $5,000.

Backwater valve installation
50 per cent of the cost to install a backwater valve inside your home, up to a maximum of $675.

Sewer lateral (pipe) lining and repair
50 per cent of the costs to repair your sewer lateral (pipe), up to a maximum of $2,000.

In addition to the subsidy program, there are other ways to reduce the risk of flooding. Halton’s Flood Prevention Guide (PDF file) includes helpful information and steps to consider during and after a flood and includes proactive steps that property owners should take, including:

  • ensuring your yard slopes away from your house, not towards it;
  • applying weather protection sealant around basement windows;
  • keeping eavestroughs and downspouts clear and free of debris; and
  • keeping floor drains inside of your house clear.

By working together, we can help ensure our community is resilient to unpredictable weather and remains a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire. Visit our website to find more flood prevention tips or learn about our subsidy program.
