COVID-19 vaccine updates for health care professionals

COVID-19 vaccination status

Halton is currently focused on vaccinating priority populations as identified by the Province, including recent Provincial direction to accelerate vaccinations for residents in long-term care and high-risk retirement homes, second doses for prioritized health care workers and first doses for patient-facing health care workers.

To book an appointment for patients:

  • To determine if patients are eligible for vaccination, visit our Who is currently eligible in Halton webpage.
  • If patients are eligible and would like to get the COVID-19 vaccine, they can visit the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics webpage to book an appointment.
  • Remember to have ready:
    • name and address (including postal code)
    • a government issued I.D. ready such as an Ontario health card
    • home phone number and/or mobile phone number, if applicable
    • email address, if available, for confirmation email

Who is eligible?

Halton Region is following the Province’s three-phased vaccine distribution implementation plan (external link). For information on groups that are currently eligible for vaccination, please check our Who is currently eligible in Halton webpage.

Please note: Halton Region Public Health does not have the authority to provide any exceptions.

Where to get vaccinated

Halton Region currently has seven community vaccination clinics. Clinic locations have been selected based on accessibility, and the ability to support health and safety measures and efficient clinic operations. These are initial locations and others may be identified as required.

 

Booking an appointment

  • If you are eligible, please book your appointment by visiting Halton Region’s COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics webpage. If you need assistance with booking, please call 311. Please do not call if you are not currently eligible.

Providing support for COVID-19 immunization

Proactively engage your patients who are eligible for vaccine or will be eligible soon. Encourage them to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible. Address any questions or concerns they have about the COVID-19 vaccines.

  • Clear contraindications
    The COVID-19 vaccine is not recommended for individuals with a history of severe allergic reaction to any components of the vaccine:
    • Medicinal ingredient: mRNA
    • Non-medicinal ingredients:
      • ALC-0315 = ((4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate)
      • ALC-0159 = 2-[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide
      • 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine
      • cholesterol
      • dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate
      • monobasic potassium phosphate
      • potassium chloride
      • sodium chloride
      • sucrose
      • water for injection

Patients who have had a severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis or have a known allergy to a component(s) of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, including polyethylene glycol (PEG), MUST consult a medical professional, such as their doctor, allergist or immunologist to discuss COVID-19 vaccination. If a physician still recommends COVID-19 vaccination, the physician will need to review the patient information with the Associate Medical Officer of Health by calling 311.

Pharmacies currently enrolled in the 2020/2021 Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP) are eligible to be considered for COVID-19 vaccine administration. No new UIIP enrollment will be undertaken at this time.

Final site selection will be determined by the Ministry of Health. Pharmacies will be contacted by the ministry to participate and enroll in the program, including completion of a COVAX Access Agreement, establishing billing policies and procedures, and onboarding of users for the COVAX system.
