Have you heard of Tuberculosis? It’s not just a disease from the history books—it’s still around today.

What is Tuberculosis (TB) and how does it spread?

TB is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that usually attack the lungs. It spreads through the air, from one person to another.

There are two types of TB:

Active TB: when someone feels sick and can spread it to others.

Latent or dormant TB: when someone has been infected but doesn’t feel sick and can’t spread it to others.

What’s Public Health’s role?

Halton Region Public Health investigates all cases of TB and works with healthcare professionals to support people who are sick or have been exposed to TB. In 2024, Halton Region managed 18 cases of active TB, and 249 cases of latent/dormant TB.

We also connect clients to free medication make sure they are taking it correctly to recover from TB. This helps keep our community safe and healthy by reducing the spread!
