Background Information – NGTA Corridor Provincial Highway Study

Since December 2006, the Province’s Ministry of Transportation has been working through an Environmental Assessment (EA) process for the Niagara to Greater Toronto Area (NGTA) Study. This study is supposed to look at all the transportation options (including rail, road, transit and marine) that might improve transportation between Niagara and the GTA.

Halton Region and the City of Burlington have been continually meeting with the Provincial Ministry of Transportation, expressing the opposition of Halton Council and our residents to a highway cutting through the Escarpment.

Update – July 4, 2012

On July 4, 2012, John Slobodzian, Project Manager with the Ministry of Transportation and Mike Delsey of AECOM made a presentation to the Halton Region Planning and Public Works Committee on the current Environmental Assessment (EA) Study being conducted on the Niagara to GTA Corridor Provincial Highway and the additional work to be carried out to further evaluate options through Halton Region.

    Update – May/June 2011

    On June 1, 2011, Regional Council adopted a recommendation stating “That the Minister of Transportation be advised that, in accordance with Halton’s stated and continuing position, the Region strongly opposes the establishment of a new facility crossing the Niagara Escarpment to address transportation demand in the West Area.

    Update – February 8, 2011

    Regional Chair Gary Carr along with Mayor Rick Goldring of Burlington met with the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and successfully resolved the Niagara to GTA Corridor issue.

    Update – December 2011

    As part of the Province's response to Halton and Burlington's Official Plans, the province has included the location of the potential Niagara to GTA corridor highway.

    As a result of this location Regional Chair Gary Carr, City of Burlington and Regional Councillor Blair Lancaster and City of Burlington and Regional Councillor John Taylor hosted a public meeting about the potential location of the Provincial Niagara to GTA Corridor Highway at Mainway Recreation Centre, in Burlington, on Monday, December 13.

    As part of the Province’s response to Halton and Burlington’s Official Plans, the Province has included the location of the potential.
