Local Supports and the Halton Breastfeeding Connection

Halton Region has many breastfeeding resources and supports for new parents.

Breastfeeding clinics, drop-Ins and lactation consultants

Halton Baby Friendly Initiative (HBFI) maintains a comprehensive list of available local breastfeeding supports (external link). Halton Region is a member of HBFI, a non-profit community coalition who promote, protect and support breastfeeding.

Halton Breastfeeding Connection - parent-to-parent breastfeeding phone support

The Halton Breastfeeding Connection is a volunteer program that provides free parent-to-parent telephone support for breastfeeding parents. Trained volunteers are parents who have breastfed a minimum of 4 months.

Our volunteers:

  • Provide help with the normal process of breastfeeding
  • Share information, support and encouragement around breastfeeding
  • Offer support for as long as you need it

Pregnant
  • Register at least 1 month before your due date.
  • Get paired with a local volunteer who will contact you before you give birth”
  • After you deliver your baby, your parent volunteer will continue to offer support.

Volunteer with the Halton Breastfeeding Connection

To be a volunteer we ask that you:
  • Have breastfed for a minimum of 4-6 months.
  • Have positive feelings about breastfeeding.
  • Are enthusiastic and available to support new parents with their breastfeeding questions over the phone.
  • Live in Halton and be familiar with local parenting and breastfeeding resources.
  • Be available to attend two volunteer orientation sessions, and a twice a year update session.
As a telephone support volunteer, you are expected to:
  • Learn how to provide telephone support.
  • Communicate regularly with your volunteer coordinator.
  • Contact breastfeeding program parents prior to their baby’s birth.
  • Provide regular ongoing support to breastfeeding parents after their baby comes home.
  • Be familiar with local breastfeeding supports and services.
  • Update your breastfeeding knowledge.
  • Understand the limits of your peer role and recognize when a client needs professional support.
