Compost Giveaway is back! Grab some gardening gold May 5-11
Apr 29, 2025
Our Annual Compost Giveaway is back! Did you know we compost all the yard waste sent to us? That means your tree trimmings, leaves, sticks, and twigs become natural, nutrient-rich compost—some real gardening gold!
As a thank you for helping divert approximately 30,000 tonnes of yard waste from the landfill last year, we’re inviting you to the Halton Waste Management Site from Monday, May 5 to Sunday, May 11 to pick-up compost, free of charge.
Stop by anytime between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Saturday or 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
As a friendly reminder, this event is for residents of Halton only, please bring proof of residency.
Our Compost Giveaway is popular! To get back to your garden quicker, try visiting during the week to scoop up your free compost.

What should you bring?
You’ll pick up the compost straight from the source, so come ready with your shovels and containers (and gloves if you like). You can take home the equivalent of seven containers (120-litre or equivalent) worth of compost.
Grab some compost and give what you can!
We also use this opportunity to collect donations for our local food banks. Thanks to Halton residents generosity, we’ve been able to donate over 5,000 non-perishable food items to support those who need it most over the last three years. If you have non-perishables, consider bringing them along! We will also accept debit and credit donations (no cash at this time please).
How to make the most of this nutrient-rich compost
Here are some easy ways to put your freshly shoveled compost to good use:
Mix it into your garden soil: Before planting, mix compost into your garden beds to enrich the soil. A good rule of thumb is adding 1 part compost to 2-3 parts soil. This dynamic duo improves drainage, adds nutrients, and helps your plants grow stronger!
Top-dress your lawn: Sprinkle a thin layer of compost (around half an inch or less) over your lawn in the spring or fall. This will nourish your grass and retain moisture, and as a bonus, it’s a natural way to reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers.
Boost your veggie or flowerpots: Add a scoop of compost to potted plants or mix it into your container soil for extra nutrients. Just be sure not to pack it too tightly—roots need air.
Mulch around trees and shrubs: Spread the compost around the base of trees and shrubs (but not touching the trunk) to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and feed the soil.
