On December 7, 2022, Halton Region hosted its Inaugural Meeting for the new term of Regional Council. The meeting included a brief ceremony with Declarations of Office for the Chair and each individual Councillor, administered by His Worship, Justice of the Peace, Mark J. Curtis.
“I am honoured to serve this community in my fifth consecutive term as Regional Chair, and I would like to congratulate my fellow Councillors on their election,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “We have a strong track record of success—97 per cent of residents surveyed are satisfied with Regional services. We have 11 years of being recognized as a top employer, the best business growth, job creation and low unemployment performance in the GTA, and 34 years of consecutive AAA credit ratings ensuring we deliver top value for taxpayer dollars. We are going to work together to ensure that Halton continues to be a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.”
As part of the ceremony, Chair Carr delivered an Inaugural Address profiling the Region’s strategic investments and initiatives over the last four years, despite the difficulties and impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights included:
- creating additional housing units, assisted housing opportunities and supports to prevent homelessness;
- completing and operationalizing three new Paramedic Stations to improve service levels within the community;
- investing in transportation infrastructure to accommodate community growth and maintain the state-of-good repair;
- committing to establishing long and short-term goals in support of environmental sustainability and climate change;
- making strategic investments in programs, services and supports to enhance the health, safety and well-being of residents; and
- responding to the COVID-19 pandemic emergency, including emerging variants, outbreaks and issues, and delivering the vaccination program in Halton.
Chair Carr outlined the process to develop the 2023-2026 Strategic Business Plan, which will set Council’s priorities, actions and projected outcomes for the new term. Among these key priorities is continuing to keep taxes at or below the rate of inflation, advancing Reconciliation and Indigenous Relationship building, community safety and well-being and supporting environmental sustainability and climate change.
The Chair closed his remarks by highlighting Halton Region’s many years of success working with the Local Municipalities and all levels of government to meet the needs of the people of Halton while ensuring minimal overlap in the delivery of services.
