On May 28, 2023 at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) (external link) Conference and Annual General Meeting, Regional Councillor Rory Nisan was re-elected to the 2023-2024 Board of Directors for FCM. He was also elected by his peers to be the Chair of the Ontario Caucus. This will be his fifth term representing Halton Region at FCM. In February of this year he was also elected as the Vice President at Large for the Board of Directors for the remainder of the 2022-2023 term. FCM is the national voice of local government and helps advocate for municipalities to ensure their needs are reflected in federal policies.

“I’m pleased to congratulate Councillor Nisan on being re-elected to the FCM Board of Directors and as Chair of the Ontario Caucus,” said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. “It is critical that Halton municipalities have a strong voice at FCM and Rory’s dedication to advocating for change on priority issues impacting Halton residents has been essential.”

Since joining FCM’s Board of Directors in 2019, Councillor Nisan has advocated for municipal priorities to the Federal Government, including affordable and assisted housing, rural broadband infrastructure, climate change mitigation and adaptation and increased municipal infrastructure funding. As an FCM Board Member, Councillor Nisan has served as Chair for the Standing Committee on International Relations, the Governance Representative in the Inclusive Municipal Leadership Program and as a member of the Rural Forum. He has also served on the Standing Committee on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee on Anti-Racism and Equity and the Standing Committee on Community Safety and Crime Prevention.

At the FCM Annual General Meeting, the Board of Directors endorsed resolutions for action including establishing an urgent intergovernmental platform on mental health, taking action to address the crisis of homelessness and the need for the Federal and Provincial Government to engage municipalities on the development of a new, modernized fiscal framework for municipalities.

“I’m honoured to be re-elected to the FCM Board of Directors and as the FCM Chair of the Ontario Caucus and I look forward to continuing the important work we are doing on municipal issues that impact so many people living in Halton,” said Councillor Nisan. “Working alongside my Board colleagues I will continue to advance local solutions to the national challenges facing municipalities across the country. I also want to thank my Halton colleagues for their continued support.”
