A healthy school promotes healthy relationships, positive self-esteem & healthy living skills. Learn about resources to create a positive school environment.

Part of being a healthy school includes promoting healthy relationships, positive self-esteem and healthy living skills. Providing curriculum supports, supportive social and physical environments, and resources on healthy relationships, self-esteem and living skills can provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy choices.

Teachers and school staff can use the following resources to help promote healthy relationships, self-esteem and living skills that will help create a supportive environment for students.

Elementary

Go Girls (external link) This is a group mentoring program for girls ages 12-14 that focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. The goal of this program, delivered by Big Brothers Big Sisters, is to build positive self-image. Big Brothers Big Sisters (external link).
Game On! (external link) This is a group mentoring program providing boys and young men with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices. This program is delivered by Big Brothers Big Sisters

Lions Quest Canada: The Centre for Positive Youth Development (external link) This organization provides information and resources on the 40 Developmental Assets®. It provides innovative and well-researched programs, products, training and services for youth, parents, educators and community leaders to foster positive youth development.
Search Institute® (external link) This organization bridges research and practice to help young people be and become their best selves. It provides information and resources on the 40 Developmental Assets®.

Elementary

Helping Children Feel Good About Themselves (PDF file) This resource provides "What can you do?" information for parents and caregivers.
Healthy Living...Healthy Children (PDF file) This resource guide helps children to eat healthy, be active and feel good about themselves. It is designed for parents and caregivers to promote healthy lifestyles in children.
