Regional Chair Gary Carr: Keeping everyone safe as businesses reopen

As businesses start reopening again, we must make sure that employers in Halton are prepared to protect their employees and customers from COVID-19. Moving forward to the “new normal” means we need to keep safety top of mind to ensure that everyone stays healthy, and there are ways that we can all do our part.

Our Small Business Centre is working with community partners and helping local businesses navigate the resources available during COVID-19. Our team of expert consultants have provided services by phone, email and video conferencing throughout the pandemic. The Small Business Centre is supporting local businesses every step of the way—whether it’s through one-on-one consultations, virtual business seminars or updates on the latest resources and relief programs—and they will continue to do so in the days to come.

Staying informed on the latest health advice is essential to preserving our progress in flattening the curve and keeping our economy on a path of recovery. To make it easy for businesses to find helpful information and guidance, we have developed a Resources for Businesses webpage on halton.ca/COVID19. The page is a one-stop hub of resources, support and information on reopening safely, tips to prevent COVID-19 in the workplace and industry-specific guidance. It also includes resources from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, including safety guidelines and posters.

To help businesses through this transition, Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region’s Medical Officer of Health has also released a video with steps you can take to protect your employees at work. I support Dr. Meghani’s position that all Halton employers and employees should review the documents from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development to learn about the safety measures you need to put in place. To watch the full video, and for more videos from the Halton Region Public Health team, please visit the Region’s Youtube channel (external link).

Halton Region Public Health and the Ministry will continue to support businesses by providing important information on infection prevention and control practices, and we will work together to follow up with concerns about COVID-19 and workplace safety. Our focus is on keeping residents and employees safe during COVID-19 and we know employers in our community are changing the way that they do business to help protect their employees and customers.

Thank you for the steps you are taking to help protect the health of our community. We are all in this together. To find supports and more information, please visit our COVID-19 Resources for Business page on halton.ca. For more details on our response to COVID-19, visit halton.ca/COVID19.
