Regional Chair Gary Carr: Add physical activity to your daily routine to improve your health and well-being!

Our lives have changed significantly due to COVID-19, including how we typically stay active. From online options to outdoor activities with your household, there are many ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily life, which is more important now than ever to support your health and well-being.

According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults should be physically active for at least 150 minutes per week—or 30 minutes a day, five days a week. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some facilities may be closed or your scheduled activities may be postponed, but it is still important to stay active. Here are some ideas for you and your family:
  • Get outside for a walk, bike ride or climb stairs at your home when the weather is a challenge.
  • Participate in an online class such as aerobics, yoga, interval training or kickboxing.
  • Do activities in your home or yard—housework and yard work count as ways to stay active.
  • Build an obstacle course with your kids or do a treasure hunt in your yard.
  • Search Youtube for free access to thousands of videos created to help keep you active.
  • Check out ParticipACTION’s online resources. They offer a resource guide, Fit Breaks every weekday on Facebook and a free ParticipACTION app to track your active minutes.
  • Dance, jump, and play—there are countless ways to be creative and have fun!
