The Nelson Quarry application is currently under technical review by the Joint Agency Review Team (JART) which includes Halton Region, the City of Burlington, Conservation Halton and the Niagara Escarpment Commission. JART is responsible for providing technical advice to each agency that reviews the application and is dedicated to ensuring policies and regulations are followed, and the interests of Halton residents are protected at each stage of the review. We are working closely with our partners to ensure all stakeholders including the public understand each stage of approval for the Nelson Quarry application.
We have detailed information posted on our Mineral Aggregates page on halton.ca related to the application including the following reports and technical resources that may be of interest to the public:
- Report No. LPS08-20 Re: “Proposed Expansion to the Burlington Quarry (Nelson), Pre-consultation Meeting”.
- Report No. LPS51-20 re: “Update on the Proposed Expansion to the Burlington Quarry by Nelson Aggregate Co., Receipt of Complete Application, File No. RQ61A”.
- Report No. LPS12-21 re: “Update on the Proposed Expansion to the Burlington Quarry (Nelson Aggregate Co.), Submission of Letter of Objection, File No. RQ61A”.
As part of its application, in the section pertaining to rehabilitation of lands used for aggregate extraction, Nelson Aggregates offers to donate their land at the end of the life of the quarry, proposed to be phased out in stages over 30 years. It has been suggested the rehabilitated quarry could be used as a large park in Halton.
The focus of the review for the Regional Official Plan Amendment application is on the range of potential impacts of an expanded quarry to the community, the environment and quality of life for residents directly affected by the proposed expansion. The proposed after-use of the quarry site as parkland is not part of the technical consideration for the amendment application.
We are committed to ensuring you can easily access information about the review process to submit timely input at each stage of review.
Together, we ensure Halton is a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
