Regional Chair Gary Carr: Shopping local to support farms and agri-businesses in Halton

Visiting local markets and farms in Halton for fresh produce and specialty goods is one of my favourite activities at this time of the year. After a difficult year during the pandemic, local farms and agri-business need our support more than ever. They have worked to adapt their operations to offer online purchases, delivery and curbside pick-up to continue to provide fresh produce and products to our community. Many of you have already experienced these changes when supporting a local farm, and with local farmers’ markets starting to open up across Halton in the coming weeks, there are many convenient ways to get fresh produce close to home.

Our Simply Local online map is an easy way to learn about farms near you, find out what’s in season or plan your next agri-venture. If you are on the go, you can also access the map from your phone or tablet.

Use the map to check out what Halton has to offer, including:
  • farmers’ markets;
  • farms with fresh produce and seasonal activities; and
  • nurseries and garden centres.
As the Province begins to lift restrictions and we’re able to visit local farms and agri-businesses, please follow public health guidance and any additional measures that have been implemented by the business to keep their staff and our community safe. In addition to using the Simply Local map, I encourage you to check directly with the farm for additional safety measures, to ensure they are open, and for curbside pick-up or delivery options. I’d also like to thank residents for continuing to do your part as we work together to support our local economy and stop the spread of COVID-19. For more information about public health measures in place and how to stay safe while exploring farms, markets or other agricultural locations, please visit halton.ca/COVID19.

By actively supporting local farmers and agri-businesses, we can help keep Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
