Oversize Permits


Permit types

You need a permit to carry oversize loads on Halton Regional Roads. These permits generally apply to transport and trucking organizations. Applicants must ensure their permits are current. There are no notifications of permit expiry.

Annual Oversize Permit

Single vehicle/combinations including cargo within these dimensions:

  • width: 2.60 to 3.99 m
  • height: 4.15 to 4.25 m
  • length (single vehicle): 12.50 to 15.50 m
  • length (in combination): 23.00 to 36.70 m

Single-Trip Oversize/Overweight Permit

Vehicle combinations of more than these dimensions:

  • width: 3.99 m
  • height: 4.25 m
  • length (in combination): 36.74 m
  • weight: 63,500 kg

Application process

Annual Oversize Permits

Schedule an appointment with Halton Region.

Prepare the required documentation:

  • list of all vehicles/escort vehicles: make, model, VIN, license plate numbers
  • Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration number
  • signed original certificate of insurance (hardcopy, no faxes/photocopies) - minimum $5 million, naming the Region of Halton as “Additionally Insured”
  • if renewing a permit, provide a copy or the permit number

Make the payment of $355.22 using a credit card by completing Halton's Authorization Form (can be obtained from pwpermits@halton.ca). You can also pay by phone.

Once you receive the permit, be sure to obey its stated conditions.

Single-Trip Oversize/Overweight Permit

Prepare the required documentation:

  • cover letter with your contact information
  • proposed route indicating the Regional Roads being travelled
  • date of trip
  • detailed load description
  • axle spacing/load diagram
  • Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration number
  • list of all vehicles/escort vehicles: make, model, VIN, license plate numbers
  • signed original certificate of insurance (hardcopy, no faxes/photocopies) - minimum $5 million, naming the Region of Halton as “Additionally Insured”

Submit PDF copies of documentation by emailing PWPermits@halton.ca

Wait for approval. The Service Permits Group issues approved permits. They will contact you to schedule a day and time to make payment and create your Permit at the Permits counter.

Make the payment of $5,694.42.

  • $5,306.00 is a refundable deposit against damages; if there is no damage to Regional Roads or property, you will be refunded the security deposit upon final inspection.
  • You can pay using a credit card by completing Halton's Authorization Form (can be obtained from PWPermits@halton.ca ). You can also pay by phone

Once you receive the permit, be sure to obey its stated conditions.
