It's our own garbage

Oct 29, 2024

Thank you, Halton residents! In 2023, you diverted 136,285 tonnes of residential waste from the landfill—that’s 58 per cent of the community’s waste. The total garbage landfilled at the Halton Waste Management Site was 69,315 tonnes but we maximized waste diversion by re-using material and re-directing it through our programs and your participation in them!

Here is how we diverted waste in 2023:

Blue Box
47,983 tonnes
Green Cart
33,176 tonnes
Yard Waste
30,016 tonnes
Houshold Hazardous Waste
748 tonnes
Electronic Waste
325 tonnes
Other Waste
24,037 tonnes

Halton Region's comprehensive approach to waste diversion

Our waste diversion strategy has three key elements:

  • advocacy
  • programs and services
  • community outreach and education

Our Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee also plays an important role in promotion of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) to minimize waste going to the landfill.

Successful advocacy

Through collaboration with our municipal partners, Provincial legislation was updated, enabling increased industry support for the proper recycling and disposal of materials. Several programs now support extended user responsibility under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016:

  • Blue Box Regulation (O. Reg. 391/21)
  • Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) Regulation (O. Reg. 449/21)
  • Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) Regulation O. Reg. 522/20 (including lighting)
  • Tires Regulation (O. Reg. 225/18)
  • Batteries Regulation (O. Reg. 30/20)

Halton Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee

In 2023, the Halton Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee helped to raise awareness of important changes to our waste collection programs, Extended Producer Responsibility programs under the Waste Free Ontario Act, and Halton’s Solid Waste Management Strategy. The Committee includes members from our four municipalities and was established as a Condition of Approval for the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) when it opened in 1992.
