Water

We’re improving Halton’s water meter technology!

We’re swapping out all analog water meters across Halton (that require manual readings) to a modern, wireless digital system. The new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) gives you easy and secure access to your water use data, meter readings, bills and payments!

Seasonal changes in water taste and smell

In the , you may notice a change in the taste or smell of your tap water. This is a seasonal occurrence across southern Ontario caused by natural changes in Lake Ontario. Your tap water remains safe to drink, is continuously monitored and tested and meets all regulatory standards.

During warmer months, higher water temperatures can produce naturally occurring algae in Lake Ontario. These compounds may cause an earthy or musty taste and smell in your tap water. While the odour may be unpleasant, these compounds do not pose a risk to your health and the water is safe to use and drink.

If you're sensitive to taste or odour, here are some simple ways to improve your drinking water experience:

  • Refrigerate a jug of water overnight – cooler temperatures can reduce odour and improve taste.
  • Add a slice of lemon, lime, or orange – citrus can help mask the earthy flavour.
  • Use a carbon filter pitcher or faucet filter – be sure to change filters regularly.

Sometimes, taste and odour issues may be related to private plumbing. If the issue persists or seems isolated to your home, we recommend checking for plumbing-related causes. Learn more about potential causes and solutions.

We appreciate your understanding and patience during these seasonal changes. Your water continues to be monitored and tested to ensure it remains safe and high quality.
