Invested in Every Drop: Halton’s Commitment to Water and Wastewater Excellence

Every time you turn on the tap, flush the toilet or run a load of laundry, you’re relying on a system that works quietly behind the scenes and underground. In Halton, we’re proud to deliver clean, safe water and reliable wastewater services every day, and we’re investing in every drop to keep it that way.

Award-winning quality

In 2024, Halton produced over 65.8 billion litres of drinking water or about 180 million litres a day. That’s enough to fill:

  • 900,000,000 glasses of water
  • 3,5000 professional hockey rinks
  • 72 Olympic-sized swimming pools

But for us, it’s not just about quantity but quality. Our award-winning Burlington, Burloak and Oakville water treatment plants earned the Director’s Awards from the American Water Works Association’s Partnership for Safe Water Program (external link). Even more importantly, our systems consistently meet or exceed provincial standards:

  • 100% compliance with drinking water and maintenance regulations
  • 99.6% compliance with wastewater treatment standards

These results reflect the dedication of our teams working around the clock to keep Halton’s water flowing safely.

Planning for growth

As Halton grows, so does demand for water and wastewater services. That’s why we’re investing $5.2 billion in water, wastewater and roads infrastructure by 2031 to ensure our systems remain strong, reliable, and future-ready.

This includes:

  • capacity to serve 104,000 new homes
  • 2,095 hectares of greenfield land with secured servicing
  • AAA/Aaa credit rating that helps finance growth affordably
  • partnerships with developers to fund projects through development charges

These investments go beyond pipes and pumps. They lay the foundation for resilient communities where families can live, grow, and thrive.

Our investments at work

Oakville Water Treatment Plant Expansion

We’re expanding the Oakville Water Treatment Plant so it can deliver 130 million litres of clean drinking water every day, up from 109 million. That’s enough to keep pace with growth through 2031 and beyond. With $26.5 million invested including provincial support, we’re adding new pumps, a modern lab, and advanced treatment systems to keep your water safe and fresh.

Mid-Halton Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

We’re boosting the Mid-Halton Plant’s capacity from 125 to 175 million litres per day to handle future demand in Georgetown, Milton, and Oakville. This $320 million investment is already moving forward with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment underway. It’s all about keeping our system strong as our communities grow.

Burloak Water Treatment Plant Expansion

Large high-pressure pipes pumping drinking water through the community.

The Burloak Plant is set to triple its capacity, from 55 to 165 million litres per day. That’s a huge leap to make sure we can meet drinking water needs well into the future. Design work has begun on this $290 million project, setting the stage for decades of reliable service.

Drumquin Wastewater Pumping Station

The new Drumquin Pumping Station will move up to 1,200 litres of wastewater per second from Georgetown and parts of Milton to the Mid-Halton Plant. This facility will help resolve existing flow challenges in Georgetown while supporting future growth in southeast Milton, east Milton and southwest Georgetown. Its design prioritizes environmental stewardship by reducing the station’s footprint, enhancing reliability and performance, and minimizing long-term maintenance needs.

South Britannia Water and Wastewater Upgrades

We’re laying the groundwork for Milton’s future. The South Britannia project will install new water and wastewater mains along Fourth Line, Fifth Line, and Lower Base Line to support growth in the Britannia Secondary Plan Area. These upgrades will expand our trunk servicing network, ensuring reliable water and wastewater delivery for thousands of new homes and businesses. Design work is already underway, with construction expected to start in 2027.

State of Good Repair

Halton continues to invest in our current infrastructure, repairing and upgrading current systems throughout the region. Over the past three years, Halton has invested over $65 million annually to upgrade aging water mains and over $55 million annually to replace deteriorating wastewater pipes and build new connections. These upgrades keep our system reliable now and in the future and sustain uninterrupted, high-quality service for residents and businesses.

Invested in every drop

Through smart planning, strategic investment, and a commitment to excellence, Halton ensures that water and wastewater services continue to support our communities today and tomorrow. From tap to treatment, we’re truly invested in every drop.

As we continue to invest in the infrastructure that supports our growing communities, we’re excited to share more stories in the months ahead. Stay tuned as we highlight key projects, introduce the people behind the work, and explore how these investments are shaping Halton’s future, one initiative at a time.
