Tips for a more sustainable holiday season

Halton Region provides easy-to-use curbside waste collection programs and drop-off services to residents in Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. One of the ways we can reduce the effects of our changing climate is by working together—even small actions to reduce household waste can make a big difference in protecting the natural environment.

Whether it’s choosing more sustainable products, using the Green Cart every week or putting waste in its proper place, we have some tips to limit your waste this holiday season and all year round:

  • Find alternatives to gift wrap, such as newspapers or cookie tins.
  • Reuse wrapping paper, gift bags and bows.
  • Bring reusable bags when doing your holiday shopping.
  • Place tissue paper, free of tape and glitter, in the Green Cart.
  • Use the Green Cart for all food waste and paper products.
  • Donate items like clothing, toys and books in good condition to the Reuse Depot, located at the Halton Waste Management Site, to support local charities.
I would like to thank residents for their continued participation in our Blue Box and Green Cart programs and for using our drop-off services at the Halton Waste Management Site. Your commitment to reducing waste at home and in the community is keeping Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
