Regional Chair Gary Carr: Waste tips for a green holiday season!

Our community has made great strides in reducing community waste. Through your participation in the Region’s Blue Box and Green Cart collection programs and HWMS drop-off services, our landfill life is extended more than 30 years!

I was also pleased to see so many residents and businesses provide input on our proposed Solid Waste Management Strategy this past fall. Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey or attended a virtual public consultation! We look forward to providing an update on this important Strategy over the next year and seeing our initiatives in action.

These are great examples of how much we can accomplish when we all take steps towards a common goal.

As the holidays approach, here are some easy things we can all do to limit household waste and help make a difference:

Repurpose everyday items to wrap gifts , such as brown packing paper, fabric or cookie tins.

Bring a reusable bag when doing your holiday shopping.

Use tissue paper free of tape and glitter , which can be composted in the Green Cart.

Shop for fresh, local food using our Simply Local map to avoid processed alternatives packaged in single-use plastics.

Use our weekly Blue Box and Green Cart programs to ensure recyclables are turned into new products and organics into compost!

Your 2022 Halton Region Guide and Waste Collection Calendar is also on its way!

Our 2022 collection calendar will be available online and in mailboxes later this month. It also includes a handy tear-out with easy everyday waste reduction tips that you can hang in a convenient location. We also have information on other Regional programs and services that I hope you find useful.

As always, you can also go online to sign up for collection reminders or access our digital waste management tools.

I encourage you to visit halton.ca/waste to find more waste tips and learn about our waste management programs and Solid Waste Management Strategy. By working together to make our homes and community more sustainable, we can keep Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire for generations to come.
