Regional Chair Gary Carr: Tell us what you think of a potential vacant homes tax in Halton

Housing supply and affordability can be a challenge for those who want to live in our growing community. For many, high prices and demand have made it difficult to rent or buy a home here in Halton.

In April 2022, Regional Council directed staff to develop a proposed framework for a potential tax on vacant homes as one way to address this challenge and help improve housing supply.

This type of annual tax is commonly implemented in communities with high housing prices and a low supply of homes for sale or rent. It would only apply to unoccupied homes.

Taxing vacant homes in Halton could encourage owners to sell or rent them out, helping to improve the number of homes available for individuals and families.
