Regional Chair Gary Carr: Easy ways to practice sustainability this Earth Day

Earth Day is a great reminder of the impact we can make when we work together towards a common goal. We can all take steps to help protect the natural environment, from reducing waste to improving shopping habits and conserving natural resources.

Below are a few ways that you can make sustainable choices in your everyday life:

Reduce your waste: By making small personal changes, you can help reduce waste at home and in the community. Opt for reusable alternatives to items such as shopping bags, mugs and cutlery. Consider repurposing gently used clothes and upcycling household items. You can also look for plastic-free alternatives to items like food wrap or straws. Visit halton.ca/waste for more waste tips.

Make your commute more eco-friendly: Looking for ways to drive less? Take advantage of Halton’s active transportation infrastructure—including our cycling lanes, sidewalks and multiuse paths—to visit stores, parks or amenities near your home. You can also try carpooling with a friend or using public transit.

Help conserve water: Protect our water resources. Avoid running the tap when brushing your teeth, cleaning dishes or shaving. Check your faucets and toilets for leaks and consider using low-flow shower heads, faucets and toilets. For more ideas, visit our Indoor Water Efficiency page.

Shop for fresh food: To avoid processed food items packaged in single-use plastics, you can use our Simply Local map to find farm-fresh produce and goods near you.

Get involved: Volunteer for Earth Week events or look for a community cleanup happening in your local municipality.

In 2019, Regional Council declared a climate emergency and committed Halton to protecting and improving the resilience of the economy, environment and community. As part of this work, we have joined a network of more than 450 municipalities under the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program (external link) who are committed to reducing local greenhouse gas emissions. Our 2019–2022 Strategic Business Plan has also set objectives and specific actions related to Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change for our community.

Thank you for helping protect the natural environment! By working together to promote sustainability, we help keep Halton a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.
